My grandad Arthur Lewis Augustus Joseph Merriman was born in Chipping Campden in 1900 and lived in Watery Lane. He worked as a farm labourer and shot rabbits in the fields to earn a little more and to eat! He worked for Ashbee Silver and moved to Birmingham Jewellery Quarter to work as a silversmith before the Great War which he signed up for with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a 16 year old in 1915. He became a sniper as he was a crackshot learned when shooting rabbits! He was gassed at Arras in 1917 and invalided back to blighty where he rejoined the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter firm he'd worked for Eccleston and Hart as a driver and bodyguard as he was toughened by the war where he learned to drive In later years he worked for Guest Keen and Nettlefolds in Heath Street in Smethwick near Birmingham until he died in 1971. He loved horse racing with his farming background and gardening especially his prize chrysanthemums.
